You don't ask them to smile, sir.  You make them smile.  Except when it's my boy Charl Pilwan, you leave him alone.  Event photos are quite the bread and butter, but it's the headshots that intrigue me because every time I do this it feels like I'm the one being photographed.  I like capturing people in their natural habitat - the space we occupied as they stared into my soul.
